Weimar College Closing

Press Release from Weimar Institute

January 28, 2008
Weimar Institute of Health & Education Board Votes to Close College

After 30 years of training Seventh-day Adventist youth and young adults for lives of consecrated ministry, the Board of Directors of Weimar Institute of Health & Education voted to close the college program as of June 20, 2008. Taking fiscal responsibility, the difficult decision came after seeking various financial and ministries solutions for several years.

“We are not abandoning our goals for the educational aspect of our program. We are going to keep that an essential part of our mission. We have to get down to bedrock and develop a solid financial foundation. We must rebuild from the ground up,” says Bob Hancock, acting Chief Operating Officer and Board Chairman.

Ruth, Boaz and Christmas

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The last few days I have been reading the book, “Ruth & Boaz: Strangers in the Land” by Terri Fivash. It’s a fascinating historical fiction piece based on the Biblical story of Ruth in the Old Testament. One of the recurring themes of the book is “hesed” (hehs-ehd) which means “voluntary kindness on the life-saving level done by the sole person able to do it.” Obviously this is a parallel to the grace God has shown us by coming to earth and dying for us. Definitely a Christmas theme.

But more than that, but book got me thinking about how much I show hesed to those around me. OK, maybe it’s not live-saving, but you never know. Do I stop often to do favors for people for no reason at all? Is hesed a way of life for me? I hope so.

An engaging and thought provoking story.

Where things are in Haiti

Posted by: | Comments (1)

UPDATED
Our family has been having some discussions about where things are as we remember them on the campus in Haiti. We lived in Haiti from 1969 to 1972. Back then, Haiti was a safer place for expatriates. We started getting others in on the discussion and so I started this post so that we wouldn’t have to e-mail around the graphic files.

So let’s get started… Read More→

CitidelleFrom the best I can determine from foggy memory and sketchy data available on the Interent, this is where the Citadelle is located in Haiti.

Download Google Earth

UPDATE: Google Earth now has new, very clear satellite imagery as well as great pictures attached via Panaramio.com and linked information from Wikipedia.

UPDATE: Don’t have Google Earth? Here’s a link to the view in Google Maps – but you miss the 3D and links to addtional pictures and information.

An imposing fortress, the Citadelle in Haiti’s Parc National Historique La Citadelle sits 3500 ft on top of a mountain, overlooking the city of Cap-Haitien. Seeped in scandal and superstition, a quick look at the Citadelle’s stats highlight just some of the unusual facts of this ‘eighth wonder of the world’. Read More→

Christmas 2007

Posted by: | Comments (2)

It’s been a busy year. One thing I’ve realized is that I haven’t written much. Not many posts here since last Christmas. I guess that will be my New Year’s resolution…

Pacific Coast PosterLast summer we took off for four weeks and rode our bicycles from Centralia, Washington to San Francisco, CA. The trip was a lot of fun. We initially looked into continuing the Lewis and Clark Trail ride that Keith and I had started two years ago, but the logistics didn’t work out so we opted for the Pacific Coast instead. You can read about this summers’ trip on our journal that we posted on crazyguyonabike.com. We have made another 20×30 memory poster that is currently being framed. Click the picture for a larger view.

Our family has been here at UCA for almost a year and a half now, and we are still very glad we made the move. This is a great place to be.

Borneo Mission Trip

Posted by: | Comments (1)

Keith and I will be going on a mission trip to Borneo in March for two weeks to build two churches.

Nearly ten years ago Upper Columbia Academy sent its first group of short term missionaries to the Iban people in the jungles of Borneo to build a church. From this small beginning, the opportunity for ministry in Borneo has increased rapidly. Because UCA has returned each spring break to the same area, we have established an ongoing relationship with the Borneo Mission and its church members. This partnership has had a compounding effect. In fact, since UCA students have begun building churches, Borneo youth have begun similar evangelism and building projects. According to Gilbert Tan (the local mission leader) baptisms have tripled in Borneo the past two years, and the demand for more churches is exploding.

New Jeep and Geocaching

Posted by: | Comments (3)

We bought a “new” Jeep Cherokee that was manufactured in 1990. Still in great condition. This afternoon, we decided to do some geocaching in Idaho to give it a test. We went for two caches on mountain tops. The first one was pretty easy and we got there on an old fire/logging road that really didn’t require 4 wheel drive. The next peak over had a 2-track road that was only accessible with on off road vehicle, so up we went. We got within 400 feet of the cache and decided to park and walk the last steep portion. Looking back we could have driven it. Here are pictures…

A View of the Jeep parked in our driveway… (OK, not really!!)

View From the Second Peak
This is a picture of the Jeep just below the second peak. You can see the peak where the first picture was taken in the background.

Keith, surprisingly got pretty freaked out by the off roading… It made it an interesting trip.

Merry Christmas

Posted by: | Comments (1)

In August, we moved to from Michigan to Washington state. I now teach and run the computer network for Upper Columbia Academy near Spokane, Washington. God had blessed us and while we miss our friends in Michigan we see God’s clear leading in the change. The move, however, canceled our plans for a bike tour near Washington DC this last summer. I’ll try and recap some of the highlights from the year.
